Case 1. Kitchen Lighting

Installing

The system and all luminaires are powered by an Extra-Low Voltage (24-48V) supply. The installation of such equipment and wiring is not certified and is done according to general rules. A power supply with short circuit, overload, and overheat protection provides safety.

Regular double wire with single insulation (such as speaker cable) 18AWG is used for the system bus. For the connection of luminaires and switches/sensors, standard double wire with single insulation (e.g., for LED strip) 22AWG is used.

A. Rough-in

The work duration is not more than 6 hours and is not more than $300 (non-licensed work).

A double 18 AWG wire (the MEULUM DC-PLC system bus) is laid in the walls and ceiling, letting out loops for future MEULUM DC-PLC devices connection.

B. Final

The work duration is not more than 6 hours and is not more than $300 (non-licensed work).

1. The luminaries and the motion sensor are mounted under the cabinets. The wires from them are connected to the first end system device MEULUM DC-PLC installed in a convenient location. The MEULUM DC-PLC system bus is connected to this device.
2. The LED strip is attached to the cabinet top (usually with adhesive tape). The strip is connected to a second MEULUM DC-PLC end system device installed in a suitable location, and the MEULUM DC-PLC system bus is connected to this device.

The third MEULUM DC-PLC end system device is installed and connected in the wall switch box next to the wall switch. The MEULUM DC-PLC system bus is connected to this device.
3. Luminaires are installed on the ceiling. Next to them, a fourth MEULUM DC-PLC final system device is installed. The MEULUM DC-PLC system bus is connected to this device.

The wall switch for these luminaires is connected to the third MEULUM DC-PLC end system device.
4. The ceiling motion sensor (room sensor) is connected to the fourth MEULUM DC-PLC end system device.
5. The MEULUM DC-PLC power supply is connected to a 110V electrical mains supply. The MEULUM DC-PLC system bus is connected to the power supply output, and the MEULUM DC-PLC control system device is installed next to it.

Wishes

1. Lightings over the countertop and sink.

The work lights are automatically switched on when a person approaches the worktop or sink, giving a high illumination level in food preparation and dishwashing areas. The luminaires turn off automatically when no movement is detected near the worktop or sink for 3 minutes.

2. Light fixtures for crown molding. Lights inside cabinets and under shelves.

Background/decorative lighting is switched on and off by a person. It can supplement the main lighting in the kitchen or be used as the sole lighting to create a comfortable atmosphere.

3. Ceiling lights.

A person switches the main lighting on and off. The light can be used alone or together with background lighting.

4. General.

Automatic switching off of all lights in the kitchen when no motion is detected in the room for 20 minutes.
If a person forgets to turn off the kitchen lights manually, they should automatically turn off when no movement is detected in the kitchen for a longer period of time.

5. General.

The background and main lighting should be modern. This means the light should be cool during the day and warm in the evening.

Required equipment

1. First wish

Luminaires

Two two-foot DC 24V linear LED lights are placed under the cabinets above the countertop and another under the cabinet above the sink.

Example: Hands-free kit of three lights with sensor for kitchen countertop and sink / $120 for 36"

Control

The control uses motion sensors near the sink and the countertop. The sensors are placed under the cabinets next to the light fixtures.

MEULUM DC-PLC

The end system unit is placed behind the cabinet near the countertop and sink.

Wires

The wires are connected to the end unit:
- from each luminaire (three channels)
- from each sensor (two channels)
- system bus

2. Second wish

Luminaires

A 10-foot DC 24V white light (warm and cool) LED strip is placed on the top exterior surface of the cabinets. Six one-foot lengths of DC 24V white light (warm and cool) linear LED fixtures (warm and cool) are placed inside the cabinets and under shelves.

Control

A conventional wall switch located at the entrance to the room is used for control. The mains power supply is disconnected from this switch.

MEULUM DC-PLC

The end system unit is placed on the cabinet next to the LED strip, and the other end unit is placed near the wall switch in the box.

Wires

The wires are connected to the end unit:
- from LED strip (two channels - cold and warm)
- from luminaires inside cabinets (parallel connection of luminaires; two channels - cold and warm)
- system bus

The wires are connected to the end unit near the wall switch:
- from the switch
- system bus

3. Third wish

Luminaires

LED luminaires with white light (warm and cool) DC 24V are placed on the ceiling.

Control

A conventional wall switch located at the entrance to the room is used for control. The mains power supply is disconnected from this switch.

MEULUM DC-PLC

The end system unit is placed conveniently on the ceiling next to the luminaires. The wall switch is connected to the end unit used for the background light switch.

Wires

The wires are connected to the end unit:
- from ceiling lights (two channels - cold and warm)
- system bus

The wires are connected to the end unit near the wall switch:
- from the switch

4. Fourth wish

A wide-angle motion sensor located on the ceiling is used for control.

MEULUM DC-PLC

The sensor is connected to the end unit used for ceiling lights.

Wires

The wires from the sensor are connected to the end unit.

4-5. Fourth and fifth wishes

A conventional stabilized power supply for LEDs and a control system unit is also installed.

The system bus is connected to this power supply and the control system unit. The operation scenarios of pts. 1-5 are set up in the visual editor on a cell phone or desktop computer browser and saved in the control unit.
